Special Interview

Back Street Boys

10 years after the debut Back Street Boys still has an overwhelming popularity.
They got the No.1 rate at <Oricon Monitor Research> for <The western male artists you want to meet now selected by females> that was released several days ago! Here’s the story about the long waited event they had in Japan on October 1st and the new interview.

A deluxe producer team only possible for BSB

<This is us>, the new album appealing squarely presents intensively all about the group. It contains strong vocal of up tempo with each part studded with their pursuing pops virtues, the groove that makes you can’t help dancing and the melancholy ballade. It’s not merely a revival, but perfectly showing the atmosphere of 2009.
[Brian] In recent years, the scene has shifted to electro & dance style, and it also really feels that music shares the same cycle with the fashion. Our group is trying to returning back to the traditional dance and pop line. Because all we knew is that we want to represent the best of us.

After becoming a four-piece band they have naturally put this idea into the new album 2 years ago we.
[AJ] During the last tour we had a conversation about what sound we want and which direction we want to go. We listed up the talents we wanted to work with after we came to an agreement, and as a result we basically achieved the goal. Thanks to all of the people who participated in this album, we did a great job.

They have many interesting ways for invitation. It’s admirable that Back Street Boys gathered so many hot creators.
[Howie] This album doesn’t mean that we’re flying back to the original style; instead we’re trying to challenge something new to improve ourselves. So all of us made a slambang effort to call our idol producers, like T-Pain,Jim Jonsin who produced the hit single <Kiss Me Thru The Phone> for Soulja Boy, and Claude Kelly who wrote <Circus> for Britney Spears, <Without You> for Kelly Clarkson, they’re all the producers who’re now successful for pop radio.
[Brian] During the tour, we did the first recording at Manchester. It was <Undone> by Ryan Tedder(leona lewis <Bleeding Love>) , and it’s really a cool song with the contrast between the melody and the sound, and also the undertone of falsetto.
[Nick] The producer of the title song <This Is Us> is Jim Jonsin who we wanted to work with on the top of the list. He represented the vibraphone of Miami bass club. Wyclef Jean came to the studio during the recording also praised a lot for this song. I hope this will be our best smash hit.
We really found a piece of excellent music

Of course the cooperation with those inspired producers are significant, however Max Martin can be called the indispensible person who make them return to their origin. He used to create the <I Want It That Way> and <Shape of my Heart>, and his name is big enough to ensure the expectation values of the fans.
[Brain] I was in Sweden for the tour so I got a chance to have dinner with him. At that time, I talked about the direction of our new album and future plans. And then our thoughts were reflected in the single <Bigger> that he wrote for us.

Max Martin has a reputation for sad ballade, however <Bigger> turns out to has a grand melody that can make people touched. Just like Brain said “Max looks like one of us”, their trust and brilliant cooperation makes both parties reach to a new stage.

<This Is Us> targets the completion with the gigantic writer team. With the sound that brings up your tension and the stylish beat fit the time, Back Street Boys presented us the pop feature of 2009. And the music that determines the success of this album is the single <Straight Through My Heart> released prior to the album. It is said that this single was a surprise that reached to the culmination point of the album creating. The creator of this single is RedOne who is very close to Lady Gaga and Sean Kingston.
[Nick] I love his taste of European dance. And also the beat works anywhere in the world. It’s really great.
[Brian] He said he has been waiting long time for the chance to work with us. Actually, at the moment we listened to the demo delivered to us, we could imagine how it looks like with our vocal. We couldn’t help thinking “He’s indeed the one we need!” His sense and our voices got perfectly blended; I think we really found a piece of excellent music.
